By definition, and in its simplest form, journaling is a daily record of occurrences, experiences, or observations. However, the mission of this blog is to demonstrate that journaling is a great deal more substantive than its simple definition. When approached with a clear intention it has the power to offer you emotional safety and personal peace!
Through this blog, I aim to slowly unpack the myriad of journaling practices and the unique benefits each practice possesses.
Journaling is nothing new.
Through the ages, personal journals have written many pages of history; what people felt, what they thought and what actions they took as a direct result of one inspired thought or feeling.
I am not suggesting that anyone's journal is history in the making…but then again…
At the very least, every story becomes someone's history, which is a legacy worth the paper it is written on.
Journaling as I have come to experience it is a daily written entry striving towards one goal—truth. A collection of writings destined to uncover and, better still, discover "thy self" through self-examination and reflection.
An open space which provides the room to ask the right questions and just enough visibility for the answers to find you.
A haven, safe enough to allow you enough grace to write it out so you can work it out.
You may wonder what The 5 Senses have to do with journaling. In one word—inspiration. There have been countless times when while eager to take to the page, I've found myself completely devoid of clarity or purpose when I got there.
Desprate to lay down burden to paper I could not focus long enough to write a simple word let alone a complete and cognitive thought. Other times, I could not muster the discipline to sit still long enough to quiet both mind and body.
I discovered what helped was a little sensory stimulation in the form of my favourite music in that moment (some Miles Davis on low in the background is usually my go to in the fall) or a cup of something soothing or a glass of something refreshing depending on the season ( some mint iced tea in the springtime perhaps...).
In the coming posts we'll be exploring the many wonderful ways that we can deepen our relationship with our journaling practice by intentionally layering in our senses.
Be it background music, your favourite pen, or something warm and soothing to sip on, by incorporating specific sensory elements into your daily journaling practice, you make the experience uniquely your own.
